BIO:

Edward Stephen Waitkus was born in 1919 in Cambridge, MA and died in 1972 in Jamaica Plain, MA. He played major league baseball from 1941 to 1955 as 1st baseman for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and the Baltimore Orioles, appeared in the 1950 World Series, and was selected in 1948 and 1949 as an All-Star. Waitkus got off to a hot start in 1949, hitting .305. However, on June 14th of that year, he was shot with a .22 caliber rifle in a Chicago, IL hotel by Ruth Ann Steinhagen, an obsessed teenage fan. After several operations to remove the bullet, he amazingly returned to baseball and was a key member of the Phillies' 1950 "Whiz Kids" team. Later in life, he worked summers at the Ted Williams baseball camp. Waitkus would serve as the inspiration for the Roy Hobbs character in "The Natural" and as such is an enduring legacy in Baseball history.

Kenneth Alphonse Heintzelman was born in Peruque, MO and died in 2000 in St. Peters, MO. He played major league baseball from 1937 to 1952 as pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies, and appeared in the 1950 World Series. He was also the father of Tom Heitzelman who played MLB as well.

Robert A. McDonnell was born in 1920 in Philadelphia, PA and died in 2010 in Philadelphia, PA. He went to college at Villanova University. Maje McDonnell was a Philadelphia Phillies coach from 1951 to 1957. He first joined the team as a batting practice pitcher in 1947, after graduating from Villanova University, where he starred in both baseball and basketball in spite of his small size. His college studies were interrupted by service in the Army in World War II, where he won five battle stars and a Bronze Star. After his years as a coach, he continued to work for the Phillies as a scout and as a goodwill ambassador in the community. He lived all his life in Philadelphia, PA and died there at age 89 in 2010.

Russell Charles Meyer (Rowdy or The Mad Monk) was born in Peru, IL and died in 1998 in Oglesby, IL. He played major league baseball from 1946 to 1959 as pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Athletics, and appeared in the 1950, 1953 and 1956 World Series. Meyer is one of only three pitchers in Major League history have gone at least 23-straight road starts without a loss. He went 24 consecutive road starts without a loss during the 1953 and 1954 seasons.
