He went to college at the College of William and Mary. He played major league baseball from 1946 to 1955 as pitcher for the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Athletics, appeared in the 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953 World Series, and was selected 6 times as an All-Star.
