See scans for signature quality and photo condition. BIO: Thomas Joseph Byrne was born in 1919 in Baltimore, MD and died in 2007 in Wake Forest, NC. He went to college at Wake Forest University. He played major league baseball from 1943 to 1957 as pitcher for the New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and the Washington Senators, appeared in the 1949, 1955, 1956 and 1957 World Series, and was selected in 1950 as an All-Star. While in college at Wake Forest, Byrne was asked to try out for the Detroit Tigers who wanted to sign him. Though he never signed with or played for the Tigers, photographer George Burke got a couple of photos of him in a Tigers uniform at the try out. An erratic southpaw who managed to stick around for 13 seasons despite his wildness, Tommy Byrne averaged nearly one walk per inning during his career. After his playing career, he later managed the 1963 Raleigh Mets. He returned to his alma mater in Wake Forest, NC after his retirement and served as mayor of the city from 1973 to 1987. SKU: L13933
