BIO: George Henry Stirnweiss was born in New York, NY and died in 958 in Newark Bay, NJ. He went to college at the University of North Carolina. He played major league baseball from 943 to 952 as 2nd baseman for the New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns and the Cleveland Indians, appeared in the 943, 947 and 949 World Series, and was selected in 945 and 946 as an All-Star. Stirnweiss was an All-American halfback at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After being graduated in 940, he was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League but signed with the Yankees to play baseball instead. Following his retirement as a player, he managed in the minor leagues, and later entered the banking field. Stirnweiss' death on September 5, 958, six years after his retirement, is one of the oddest accidental deaths of a Yankee player. Sternweiss was traveling aboard a Jersey Central train, and as the train was about to cross over a lift bridge between Port Elizabeth and Bayonne, New Jersey, the conductor of the train had a heart attack. The bridge was knocked down, and the train went through several signals before plunging into Raritan Bay. Snuffy Stirnweiss died at the age of 40, having drowned on the train along with half a dozen other passengers.
