DATE: 1934-37 ORIGINAL or REPRINT: Type 1 Original - Printed from the original negative within about 2 years of when it was shot TEAM: Detroit Tigers SUBJECT: Rudy York APPROXIMATE SIZE: 5"x7" NUMBER OF PHOTOS: 1 COMMENTS / CONDITION: Offered is an approximately 5"x7" original vintage photo of Rudy York, pictured in his Detroit Tigers uniform circa 1934-37. One of a collection of thirty Type 1 original period photos to be offered this week. Each bears the stamping of Apex Photograph Company on the verso, with several also having the stamping of the American League Service Bureau as well. Mose (all?) appear to be photos taken by Chicago photographer George Burke, but I have not done the extensive image searching necessary to confirm, so please just consider that a possibility for your own future research. Guaranteed to be a vintage, original photograph, not a modern day reproduction. See scans for further details including condition and stamping. BIO: Preston Rudolph York was born in Ragland, AL and died in 1970 in Rome, GA. He played major league baseball from 1934 to 1948 as 1st baseman and catcher for the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and the Philadelphia Athletics, and was selected 7 times as an All-Star. In 1947 York nearly died when a fire, believed to have been started by a cigarette, swept his hotel room. He was led to safety, but after a slow start, he was traded to the White Sox in the midseason. He was given his unconditional release in February 1948 and picked up by the Athletics, for what would be his final season as a big leaguer. After retiring, he coached for the Red Sox four seasons, serving as an interim manager in 1959 (one game). SKU: X11115
