He went to college at Catawba College and Western Carolina University. He played major league baseball from 1958 to 1959 as pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Following his playing career, Blackburn was a teacher and baseball coach at the university before becoming the recreation director at the Western Correction Center in Morganton, NC SKU: L08433
