DATE OF IMAGE: 1928 PRINT DATE: 1960s ORIGINAL or REPRINT: Type 4 - Second or later-generation photo, printed from a duplicate negative or wire photo process, in a later period TEAM: Philadelphia Athletics SUBJECT: Joe Hauser APPROXIMATE SIZE: 5"x7" NUMBER OF PHOTOS: 1 COMMENTS / CONDITION: A bit of history on this photo: George Burke or George Brace was the photographer who procuded a duplicate negative during the 1930's-1940's period by re-photographing an original print, most likely in order to add the player image to their catalog of available images in the days before photocopiers and digital scanners allowed for reproducing images by other means. Following Burke's death in 1951, George Brace inherited or obtained Burke's archive of negatives from which he continued to produce prints as well as continuing to photograph players himself and add to the archives. At some point, Brace became friends with Jim Rowe who was also an avid baseball photographer and who, like Brace, marketed images of old-time and current players through various hobby publications and outlets for autographs and general collecting. Brace loaned Rowe a large number of Burke's negatives, including copy negatives such as the one used here, to use in producing his photos. Along with the black-bordered photos that I am currently listing, were first produced by Rowe in the 1960's from those George Burke negatives loaned to him by George Brace, although the exact date of production of this print is not known. The prints such as this one which were produced from copy negatives would be considered a 2nd (or later) Generation Type IV (developed from a duplicate negative in a later period), though not a modern reproduction. This is one of a large accumulation of vintage sports photographs, slides and negatives that we will be listing over the coming months. Wear on these, if any, is mostly confined to minor corner and edge wear, but see scans for further details including condition. We do not deal in stock images or modern reprints, and all scans shown are of the actual vintage photograph, slide or negative being sold. If you have any questions about a particular piece, please ask before the auction ends. BIO: Joseph John Hauser (Unser Choe) was born in 1899 in Milwaukee, WI and died in 1997 in Sheboygan, WI.
