COMMENTS / CONDITION: Offered is an approximately 3-1/2"x5-1/2" real photo postcard of Pie Traynor, pictured in his Pittsburgh Pirates uniform circa 1933-35. The original photo was taken by George Burke in 1933-35, but this card was produced some time later (no earlier than the 1950's judging by the standard Kodak back). Comes from a large collection of such postcards that we will be listing over the coming months, all having standard postcard backs but being postally unused. Wear on these, if any, is mostly confined to minor corner and edge wear, but see scans for further details including condition. BIO: Harold Joseph Traynor was born in Framingham, MA and died in 972 in Pittsburgh, PA. He played major league baseball from 920 to 937 as shortstop and 3rd baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates, appeared in the 925 and 927 World Series, was selected in 933 and 934 as an All-Star, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 948. He received his nickname for a fondness for eating pie. He is generally considered to have been the greatest National League third baseman before the 950s. he played in the era before the Gold Glove award was created, he was regarded by most baseball observers as the best-fielding third baseman ever until Brooks Robinson came along. had a lifetime batting average of .320, and was struck out only 278 times in 7,559 career at bats. He died at age 72 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, not long after the Pirates moved into Three Rivers Stadium and retired his uniform number 20. In 999, he ranked Number 70 on The Sporting News' list of the 00 Greatest Baseball Players, and was nominated as a finalist for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Traynor is also the only Major League Baseball player ever to steal home plate in an All-Star Game.
