COMMENTS / CONDITION: MUDCAT HAS THAT TWO-HITTER LOOK---CLEVELAND: Jim (Mudcat) Grant smiles in the dressing room after the Cleveland hurler pitched a two-hit shutout against the Kansas City Athletics last night. The Indians gave Mudcat a one-run lead in the first inning and made it stand up, defeating Kansas City 1-0.

BIO: James Timothy Grant (Jim) was born in 1935 in Lacoochee, FL. He played major league baseball from 1958 to 1971 as pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos, St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics and the Pittsburgh Pirates, appeared in the 1965 World Series, and was selected twice as an All-Star. Grant was the 1965 American League Pitcher of the Year. He was the roommate of his boyhood idol Larry Doby when he first came to Cleveland, and Doby dubbed him "Mudcat", saying that he was "ugly as a Mississippi mudcat." Mudcat Grant was a television broadcaster for the Cleveland Indians for a number of years starting in 1973. He also worked on broadcasts for the Dodgers and Athletics. He has been involved in a number of other baseball-related roles, serving on the board of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, on the Baseball Assistance Team and on the Major League Baseball Alumni Association. He is a forceful and colorful speaker who regularly gives talks on his baseball career and on how his strong faith in God has helped him. He has had to deal with diabetes, arthritis and knee problems over the years, but these have not detracted form his legendary good humor and generosity.
