NUMBER OF PHOTOS: 1 COMMENTS / CONDITION: Offered is an approximately 3-1/2"x5-1/2" real photo postcard of Mace Brown, pictured in his Pittsburgh Pirates uniform circa 1935. The original photo was taken by George Burke in 1935, but this card was produced some time later (no earlier than the 1950's judging by the standard Kodak back). Comes from a large collection of such postcards that we will be listing over the coming months, all having standard postcard backs but being postally unused. Wear on these, if any, is mostly confined to minor corner and edge wear, but see scans for further details including condition. BIO: Mace Stanley Brown was born in 909 in North English, IA and died in 2002 in Greensboro, NC. He went to college at the University of Iowa. He played major league baseball from 935 to 946 as pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox, appeared in the 946 World Series, and was selected in 938 as an All-Star. Mace Brown was a javelin thrower who attended the University of Iowa on a track scholarship. He took a two year hiatus from his baseball career to serve in the Navy in World War II. After retiring as a player, he was a scout and instructor for the Boston Red Sox from 947-64. He was the pitching coach for the 965 and then returned to his scout role for the club until 979. From 979 to 989 he served as a consultant to the Red Sox. SKU: GB10845
