BIO: Martin Whiteford Marion (Slats or The Octopus) was born in 1917 in Richburg, SC and died in 2011 in St. Louis, MO. He played major league baseball from 1940 to 1953 as shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Browns, appeared in the 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1946 World Series, and was selected 8 times as an All-Star.
