He went to college at Washington State University. He played major league baseball from 1952 to 1963 as pitcher for the Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox, appeared in the 1957 World Series, and was selected 3 times as an All-Star.
