BIO: Roger Eugene Maris (born Roger Eugene Maras) was born in 1934 in Hibbing, MN and died in 1985 in Houston, TX. He played major league baseball from 1957 to 1968 as outfielder for the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics, New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals, appeared in the 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967 and 1968 World Series, and was selected 4 times as an All-Star. Maris was the American League MVP in 1961 and 1962, and was also the Major League Player of the Year in 1961 as a result of his record-breaking homerun total (61). He earned a Gold Glove Award at right field in 1960. Maris set the record of 61 home runs on the last day of the season, hitting a shot into the right field seats at Yankee Stadium off Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox. Not until the 1990s did anyone even come close to breaking it again.
