If you have any questions about a particular piece, please ask before the auction ends. BIO: Earl Douglas Averill was born in 1931 in Cleveland, OH and died in 2015 in Tacoma, WA. He went to college at the University of Oregon. He played major league baseball from 1956 to 1963 as catcher and outfielder for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels and the Philadelphia Phillies. Ronald Kenneth Hunt was born in 1941 in St. Louis, MO. He played major league baseball from 1963 to 1974 as 2nd and 3rd baseman for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos and the St. Louis Cardinals, and was selected in 1964 and 1966 as an All-Star. Ron Hunt had a decent batting average during the deadball era of the 1960's and 1970's, but he is most famous for getting plunked by the pitch. He led the league in hit-by-pitch seven times in a row, and was second in the league in that category two other times. Hunt's 50 hit-by-pitches in 1971 are the highest season total in the 20th Century, only trailing Hughie Jennings' 51 in 1896 on the all-time list. When Hunt posted his total, Jennings was credited with only 49 hit-by-pitches that season, meaning that Hunt was celebrated for a while as the all-time record holder. Years later, further research credited Jennings with two more instances in 1896, giving him back the record. But if Hunt had known the record would eventually be 51, he doubtless would have found a way to step into the path of a couple more curve balls to pass Jennings. Antonio Nemesio (Sanchez) Taylor was born in 1935 in Central Alava, Cuba and died in 2020 in Hialeah, FL. He played major league baseball from 1958 to 1976 as infielder for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and the Detroit Tigers, and was selected in 1960 as an All-Star. He worked for the Phillies as a minor league manager during the 1980s, managing the Spartanburg Traders and later the Oklahoma City 89ers in 1982, the Peninsula Pilots in 1983, the Reading Phillies in 1985, and the Utica Blue Sox in 1986 and 1987. He was a major league coach for the Phillies from 1977 to 1979 and again in 1988 and 1989. He was later a major league coach for the Florida Marlins from 1999 to 2004. Henry Charles Crawford was born in 1916 in Philadelphia, PA and died in 2007 in Glen Mills, PA. The patriarch of the Crawford family, umpire Shag Crawford began his career as an umpire in the Canadian-American League in 1950. He then moved up to the Eastern League (1950-1953) and the American Association (1954-1955). Crawford worked 3082 National League games between 1956 and 1975. He was also responsible for duties in two NLCS (1971, 1974), three World Series (1961, 1963, 1969), and three All Star Games (1962 1st Game, 1962 2nd Game, 1966).
