If you have any questions about a particular piece, please ask before the auction ends. BIO: Thomas Edward (Jr.) John was born in 1943 in Terre Haute, IN. He played major league baseball from 1963 to 1989 as pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, California Angels, Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees, appeared in the 1977, 1978 and 1981 World Series, and was selected 4 times as an All-Star. Although pitcher Tommy John won 288 major league games and may well end up in the Hall of Fame, he is perhaps most famous because he missed the 1975 season due to the ligament replacement surgery that now bears his name, Tommy John surgery. That surgery, which he pioneered, has saved the career of countless pitchers after him. He was 31 years old when injured and sat out the entire 1975 season. But John came back to get 164 of his 288 wins after the surgery and pitched to the age of 46. After his playing career ended, John was a Minnesota Twins broadcaster for several years, then became a minor league pitching coach for the Harrisburg Senators, in the Montreal Expos organization, in 2002 and the Edmonton Trappers in 2003. John managed the Staten Island Yankees in 2004. In 2007, he returned to managing with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League. Joseph Salvatore Altobelli was born in 1932 in Detroit, MI and died in 2021 in Rochester, NY. He played major league baseball from 1955 to 1961 as 1st baseman and outfielder for the Cleveland Indians and the Minnesota Twins. lli set a Florida State League record in his first year of pro ball, getting a hit in 36 straight games while playing for the Daytona Beach Explorers in 1951. In 1977, Altobelli took over the San Francisco Giants and stayed there until Dave Bristol replaced him in mid-1979. In 1980, Altobelli led the Columbus Clippers to the International League title, then coached for the New York Yankees in 1981 and 1982. Since 1998, Altobelli has been a radio broadcaster for the Rochester Red Wings. He was inducted into the Red Wings Hall of Fame in 1989.
