BIO: John Charles Ellis was born in 1948 in New London, CT and died in 2022 in New Haven, CT. He played major league baseball from 1969 to 1981 as 1st baseman and catcher for the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers. Ellis was the first designated hitter in Cleveland Indians history, in 1973.
