BIO: James Verlin Mertz was born in 1916 in Lima, OH and died in 2003 in Waycross, GA. He played major league baseball for a single season in 1943 as pitcher for the Washington Senators. His baseball career was ended when he injured his arm while serving in the military during World War II.
