COMMENTS / CONDITION: Offered is an approximately 3-1/2"x5-1/2" real photo postcard of Jake Wade, pictured in his Detroit Tigers uniform circa 1936. The original photo was taken by George Burke in 1936, but this card was produced some time later (no earlier than the 1950's judging by the standard Kodak back). Comes from a large collection of such postcards that we will be listing over the coming months, all having standard postcard backs but being postally unused. Wear on these, if any, is mostly confined to minor corner and edge wear, but see scans for further details including condition. BIO: Jacob Fields Wade (Whistling Jake) was born in Morehead City, NC and died in 2006 in Wildwood, NC. He went to college at North Carolina State University. He played major league baseball from 936 to 946 as pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and the Washington Senators. Wade joined the Jersey City Giants of the International League in 947, as he posted a 7-5 record with a 2.5 ERA helping his team to the league championship. He ended his professional baseball career with a 7-6 and a 4.96 ERA for the Buffalo Bisons (IL) in 950. Following his playing career, he worked as an electronics repair technician at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station until his retirement in 976. The municipal ballpark in Morehead City, North Carolina is named "Wade Brothers Field" after Wade, his younger brother Ben, and an older brother, Winfield ("Wink") who played minor league baseball.
