BIO: Herman Louis Franks was born in Price, UT and died in 2009 in Salt Lake City, UT. He played major league baseball from 1939 to 1949 as catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Brooklyn Dodgers, Philadelphia Athletics, and the New York Giants, and appeared in the 1941 World Series. Franks went on to manage the 1965-68 San Francisco Giants and the 1977-79 Chicago Cubs. A successful businessman off the field, Franks spent the next eight years out of the major league spotlight, apart from a partial season (1970) as a coach under Durocher with the Chicago Cubs. In 1973 Franks was part of a group that attempted to purchase the New York Yankees from then-owner CBS, and in fact outbid the group headed by the eventual owner, George Steinbrenner.
