He went to college at Fordham University. He played major league baseball from 1942 to 1951 as pitcher for the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and the Detroit Tigers, appeared in the 1942, 1943 and 1945 World Series, and was selected in 1944 and 1945 as an All-Star.
