BIO: William Symmes Voiselle (Ninety-Six and Big Bill) was born in Greenwood, SC and died in 2005 in Greenwood, SC. He played major league baseball from 1942 to 1950 as pitcher for the New York Giants, Boston Braves and the Chicago Cubs, appeared in the 1948 World Series, and was selected in 1944 as an All-Star. While born in Greenwood, South Carolina, Voiselle grew up in the nearby town of Ninety Six. He received special permission from the National League to wear the number 96 on his jersey as a way to honor his hometown. At the time, this was the highest number ever worn in major league baseball.
