He played major league baseball from 1980 to 1981 as catcher for the Chicago Cubs. After his playing career ended, former catcher Bill Hayes managed in the minors from 1988 to 1997. He was the Colorado Rockies bullpen coach in 1998, and managed in the minors again from 1999 to 2002. Hayes has been the San Francisco Giants bullpen catcher since 2003.
