AUG. 9--SAME UNIFORM, DIFFERENT TITLE--Billy Hitchcock laces a shoe before taking the field in Atlanta tonight against the Los Angeles Dodgers as the new manager of the Braves. Hitchcock, who has been serving as a coach this season for the National League team, replaces Bobby Bragan who was fired. Hitchcock managed the Baltimore Orioles in the American League in 1962 and 1963. See scans for further details including condition. BIO: William Clyde Hitchcock was born in Inverness, AL and died in 2006 in Opelika, AL. He went to college at Auburn University. He played major league baseball from 1942 to 1953 as infielder for the Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox, and the Philadelphia Athletics. He went on to manage the 1960 Detroit Tigers, 1962 and 1963 Baltimore Orioles, and the 1966 and 1967 Atlanta Braves. He was also the president of the Southern League, and the league's championship trophy is named after him. In addition to his baseball resume, Hitchcock also made a name for himself in college football and golf. As an All-Conference tailback, he led Auburn to its first bowl game (a 7-7 tie against Villanova on January 1, 1937). Later in life, he established the Billy Hitchcock Golf Tournament at his alma mater. In recognition of his contribution to the school, Auburn renamed its renovated baseball stadium "Hitchcock Field" in 2003.
