He played major league baseball from 1988 to present as outfielder for the Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets, appeared in the 1997 World Series, and was selected 9 times as an All-Star. Sheffield was the 1992 Major League Player of the Year, and has earned a total of 5 Silver Slugger Awards over the course of his career. Gary Sheffield is the nephew of Dwight Gooden. Gooden and Sheffield are also neighbors, living on the same block in Tampa, Florida. Sheffield hit his 500th major league home run (making him the 25th player to join the "club") for the Mets on April 17, 2009. He was the first player to hit his 500th home run as a New York Met.
