BIO: Luis Ernesto (Garcia) Salazar was born in 1956 in Barcelona, Venezuela. He played major league baseball from 1980 to 1992 as 3rd baseman, outfielder and shortstop for the San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and the Chicago Cubs. He suffered a frightening injury on March 9, 2011. Standing in the dugout during an exhibition game between the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals in Kissimmee, FL, he was hit flush in the face by a foul ball off the bat of Brian McCann. He collapsed to the ground, unconscious and bleeding profusely. He had to be airlifted by helicopter to a medical facility in Orlando, FL while the game was stopped and trainers feared for his life. He regained consciousness in hospital, but suffered multiple facial fractures as a result of the accident; surgeons were also unable to save his left eye, which had to be surgically removed. However, it was considered a minor miracle that he had not only survived, but not suffered any brain damage. He was released from hospital on March 17. While coach Rick Albert began the season as Lynchburg's manager, Salazar's recovery was speedy enough to be ready to manage the team's home opener on April 15. He lost that initial game, 7-2, as Lynchburg drew its largest crowd for a home opener in 20 years, a crowd which gave the manager a long standing ovation as he was introduced before the game. At the end of Lynchburg's season, he was invited to spend some time on Fredi Gonzalez's coaching staff with the Braves.
