He played major league baseball from 1982 to 1999 as infielder and designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, appeared in the 1986 and 1996 World Series, was selected 12 times as an All-Star, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
