This is one of a large number of sports promo slides that I will be listing in the coming weeks. Wear on these, if any, is mostly confined to the mount's edges, but see scans for further details including film condition. We do not deal in stock images or modern reprints, and all scans shown are of the actual vintage photograph, slide or negative being sold. If you have any questions about a particular piece, please ask before the auction ends.

Julio Cesar Franco (born Julio Cesar Robles (Franco)) was born in 1958 in Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic. He played major league baseball from 1982 to 2007 as shortstop, 1st baseman and DH for the Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets, and was selected 3 times as an All-Star. No one knows exactly how old Julio Franco is, and Julio himself has been secretive about his true age. Julio, like many other Dominicans, likely broke into pro ball with a false birth certificate. On April 20, 2006, he became (at age 47) the oldest player ever to hit a home run in the majors. He repeated the feat on September 30th, in a game in which he matched a career-high with 5 RBIs. Even more amazing is how many times he has homered in the last few years. The list of players over 45 who have hit Home Runs includes Franco 19 times, Cap Anson three times and Jack Quinn and Carlton Fisk once each. By hitting a home run run in 2007, he pushed the record for oldest player to homer to 48 years and 254 days, while he later set the mark for the oldest RBI by driving in a run 25 days after his 49th birthday. After being released by the Mets and Braves in 2007, Franco returned to Mexico. He was playing for the Tigres de Quintana Roo when he finally announced his retirement on April 30, 2008, at the age of 49.

Explanation of Type Classifications:

Type 1 = A 1st generation photograph, developed from the original negative, during the period (within two years of when the shot was taken).

Type 2 = A 1st generation photograph, developed from the original negative, during a later period (more than two years after the shot was taken).

Type 3 = A 2nd generation photograph, developed from a duplicate negative or wire transmission, during the period.

Type 4 = A 2nd generation photograph (or 3rd or later generation), developed from a duplicate negative or wire transmission, during a later period.

Original = A 1st generation photograph, developed from the original negative, which appears to be of the period but for which a print date cannot be determined for definitive Type classification. Essentially, a photo we feel is a Type 1, but which lacks certain elements necessary for definitive dating of the print.
