BUDDIES AGAIN

Tiger catcher Bill Freehan (left) and pitcher Denny McLain leave the playing field after the first inning of Wednesday night's Yankee game. The two have had their differences over a recently published book by Freehan that had parts critical of McLain. McLain pitched for the first time since his 90-day suspension.

BIO: Dennis Dale McLain was born in 1944 in Chicago, IL. He played major league baseball from 1963 to 1972 as pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, Oakland Athletics and the Atlanta Braves, appeared in the 1968 World Series, and was selected 3 times as an All-Star. McLain earned Cy Young Award and American League Pitcher of the Year honors in each of 1968 and 1969, and was also named American League MVP and Major League Player of the Year in 1968. He was originally signed by the Chicago White Sox organization, but they were unable to protect him in the minor league draft and the Tigers obtained him in 1963. The White Sox opted to protect Dave DeBusschere, another young pitcher, who went on to a great Hall of Fame career ... in basketball. McLain's brother Tim McLain pitched in the Chicago White Sox organization, and his father-in-law and brother-in-law are Lou and Jim Boudreau respectively. McLain had numerous personal problems after leaving baseball and has been in prison twice. In April of 2008, he went to jail again after missing a court appearance about a foreclosure and eviction case.

William Ashley Freehan was born in 1941 in Detroit, MI and died in 2021 in Walloon Lake, MI. He went to college at the University of Michigan. He played major league baseball from 1961 to 1976 as catcher and 1st baseman for the Detroit Tigers, appeared in the 1968 World Series, and was selected 11 times as an All-Star. He was the head coach at the University of Michigan from 1990 to 1995.
