BIO: James Anthony Piersall was born in 1929 in Waterbury, CT and died in 2017 in Wheaton, IL. He played major league baseball from 1950 to 1967 as outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels and the California Angels, and was selected in 1954 and 1956 as an All-Star. He was the subject of the movie Fear Strikes Out. He was a coach for the 1975 Rangers. He was a radio and television broadcaster for the Chicago White Sox from 1977 until 1981. In 1977, teamed with Mary Shane (the first female announcer in baseball history) for radio and television broadcasts. He was one of the few Americans whose battles with mental health issues were well-known in the 1950's. He eventually figured out that his issues would give him the freedom to act zany, which endeared him to fans.
