Minnesota Twins' new manager Calvin Ermer relaxes in his office after his first game, an 11-2 loss at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles Friday night. The 43-year-old Ermer was brought up from Denver of the Pacific Coast League to replace Sam Mele who was fired Friday by Twins' owner Calvin Griffith. Ermer started his 15th season as a minor league manager this year.

BIO: Calvin Coolidge Ermer was born in 1923 in Baltimore, MD and died in 2009 in Chattanooga, TN. He played major league baseball for a single season in a single game in 1947 as 2nd baseman for the Washington Senators. Infielder Cal Ermer played in the minor leagues from 1942 to 1951, missing the 1943 to 1945 seasons due to military service. never played above the A level in the minors but went 0-for-3 in one game in the majors with the 1947 Washington Senators. Ermer compiled a managerial record of 1906-1728 over 26 seasons (1947-1985) in the minor leagues. He was a minor league manager for many years with the Washington Senators-Minnesota Twins franchise, and also managed in the minors for the Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and New York Yankees. He replaced Sam Mele as manager of the Twins on June 9, 1967 and led the club from sixth place when he was hired to a tie for second at the season's end. He was fired after the team finished seventh in 1968, posting a 145-129 as a big league skipper. Ermer was also a major league coach for the Baltimore Orioles (1962), Milwaukee Brewers (1970-1971), and Oakland A's (1977), and a scout for the Twins (1969), Orioles (1963-1964), and Brewers (1972-1973).
