Joseph Clifton Martin was born in 1936 in Axton, VA. He played major league baseball from 1959 to 1972 as catcher, 1st and 3rd baseman for the Chicago White Sox, New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs, and appeared in the 1969 World Series. After his playing career ended, he was a Chicago Cubs coach in 1974 and teamed with Harry Caray for television broadcasts of Chicago White Sox games in 1975 on WFLD-TV, Chanel 44.
