If you have any questions about a particular piece, please ask before the auction ends. BIO: Robert Thomas Purkey was born in 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA and died in 2008 in Scott Township, PA. He played major league baseball from 1954 to 1966 as pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals, appeared in the 1961 World Series, and was selected 3 times as an All-Star. Purkey later established an insurance agency in Pennsylvania which he ran for over 30 years. Joseph Edward Becker was born in St. Louis, MO and died in 1998 in Sunset Hills, MO. He played major league baseball from 1936 to 1937 as catcher for the Cleveland Indians. After serving in the Navy during World War II he managed in the minors for several years, including stints with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jersey City Giants and Charleston Senators. Between 1955 and 1970, he was a pitching coach in the National League for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs. A member of the relatively small fraternity of former catchers who excelled as a pitching tutor (including men such as Ray Berres, Dave Duncan and Mike Roarke), Becker coached for four NL championship Dodger clubs, including the 1955, 1959 and 1963 world champions.
