If you have any questions about a particular piece, please ask before the auction ends. BIO: Robert Boden Scheffing was born in Overland, MO and died in 1985 in Phoenix, AZ. He played major league baseball from 1941 to 1951 as catcher for the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals. Scheffing also spent 2½ years (1961 through June 1963) as manager of the Detroit Tigers, leading them to 101 victories and a second-place finish in the American League in 1961. Victimized by the Tigers' slow start in 1963, he was replaced as Detroit's skipper on June 19 by Chuck Dressen. After serving as a Detroit scout and radio broadcaster, Scheffing joined the front office of the New York Mets and became general manager early in 1970 following the sudden passing of Johnny Murphy. The Mets won the 1973 National League pennant during his tenure, then fell in a seven-game World Series to the Oakland Athletics. But Scheffing is most remembered by many Met fans for his trade of young pitcher Nolan Ryan to the California Angels following the 1971 season. He also managed the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League to the 1956 PCL championship, and coached for the St. Louis Browns (1952-53) and Milwaukee Braves (1960). SKU: L14381
