He played major league baseball from 1872 to 1877 as pitcher for the New York Mutuals, Baltimore Canaries, Philadelphia Whites, Hartford Dark Blues and the Cincinnati Reds, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Candy Cummings had a brief but influential career. He is credited with being the first pitcher to throw a curveball, which he first threw at a game in Worcester, MA while playing for the Brooklyn Stars, a non-major league team. However, some historians dispute this claim. In spite of throwing a curveball, Cummings in 1875 was able to throw 417 innings but give up only 6 walks. SKU: CL02396
